SquashBallGate - the controversy that just won't die
Yesterday, I tried to move the discussion into serious matters like the Australian tour of Zimbabwe. I was hoping to provoke some stimulating discussion on the tension between sport and politics or the human rights violations of the Mugabe regime. But instead, all we got was squash ball, squash ball, squash ball. So fine, we'll talk about the damn squash ball!
Breaking news is the squash ball is now being discussed in the real world! Eg - it has moved from the blogosphere as Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Kangadaran Mathivanan was quoted as saying:
"We are of the opinion that it was unethical for Gilchrist to use a squash ball to give unfair advantage."Hmm, that's it? Who is we? I haven't heard a peep from any of the players or any other officials in Sri Lanka Cricket. I seem to recall reading a quote from Murali saying he wasn't fussed by the squash ball but I can't find any articles quoting him. Next, we had a response from Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young:
"It's a storm in a teacup, or a batting glove. To the best of our knowledge it's no different to, say, putting two or three grips on the bat handle, or batting with two pairs of gloves or having inserts sewn into the palm of gloves. All these are things which now happen. This is in the same category. It's been suggested that if shoving a squash ball into your bottom glove makes you bat like Adam Gilchrist then perhaps the ICC should make it compulsory."You know CA are taking the whole controversy seriously when they've got their spokesman performing stand-up comedy! I'm picturing him up on stage in front of a brick wall, peeling out Seinfeldisms like "and what's up with Murali's bowling action...?"
And that's it on the "official" front. On the "slightly more credible than anonymous bloggers" front, Dileep Premachandran at cricinfo sides with Gilly when he says a bunny with squash-ball-in-glove doesn't a Gilchrist make. Similarly, MCC's head of cricket John Stephenson says "The official view is that you are correct. It is no different to wearing inners, etc." Although there's also the definitive Yahoo Answers which claims to have resolved the question Adam Gilchrist use a Squash ball to hit the ball with power & won the world cup? (not so sure of the English but you get the idea). And the official resolved answer (I've trimmed it a bit, the answer tended to meander somewhat):
U know, there's a saying "fortune favors the brave" but this time fortune favored the cheat... Everybody knows that was not a "proper" win for the Aussies and it was certainly a moral victory for the Lankans. The ICC, the dumbest sports governing body in the world, should not let these things happen... the Aussies were "given" the world cup that could have been Sri Lanka's had the game been played under normal conditions and had Gillie not used the squash ball (just look at the way the rest of the players struggled to make an impact). One more thing Sri Lanka could have done in addition to the ones you've mentioned. Murali could have used a powerful small motor fitted to his palm to spin the ball even better :-) Aussies, shame on you....Personally, I agree with Peter Young (although I never would've resorted to that batting glove joke, that was awful). However, it would hose down the situation if the ICC came out and clarified the ruling on this one. Well, maybe, the way the ICC have been botching things lately, it's more likely they'll inflame the situation. If the squash ball was more visible, I would expect them to come out legislating how sponsor's logos are to be branded on hidden squash balls.
And on that note, the final word goes to our very own Andrew (regularly commenter on cricket-blog.com) who has seized upon this controversy with entrepreneurial brilliance, releasing a new product Gilly's POWER Magic BALL: "The only squash ball to receive official recognition from the Sri Lankan Cricket Secretary and Internet Bloggers from all over the subcontinent!" Now that's a ringing endoresement. However, I strongly recommend you read the disclaimer before shelling out your USD$50.00.

Who makes the rules of cricket? The blogging community? Sri Lankan journalists? The ICC maybe? No no no, its the MCC.
So when the MCC's head of cricket says "The official view is that you are correct. It is no different to wearing inners, etc."
Then the discussion is over and sore losers need to accept it. Time to crack a beer and enjoy another 4 years as unbeaten world cup champions! :)

The comment by Murali is in this article.
----------------
That was contradicted by Muttiah Muralitharan. "That is [Mathivanan's] personal opinion; the team doesn't think that," the spinner told the Herald.
"If anything, I would think having a squash ball in your glove would be uncomfortable. I don't know if I could even hold a bat with something like that in my glove. So if [Gilchrist wants to do it], it is OK with me."

Its official - the MCC has cleared Gilchrist of both breaking the rules and undermining the spirit of the game:
Full article here.
So, for all you Sri Lankan bloggers who wanted "closure" and an "official statment", please enjoy.
Since the MCC make the rules, bringing it up with the ICC would be mighty embarassing, so I doubt much more will be said now.
See you in 4 years.

"Apparently the addendum to the inside of the gloves was not for protection from injury but to improve the way the batsman gripped the bat handle. This should not be considered unfair," the MCC said in a statement.
"The incident could not be classed either as contravening the law or as breaching the spirit of the game."

JC the strange thing is that there are no orders yet...... *crossed finger*. Though I think the statement from the MCC is going to hamper business a little.
Maybe I should go advertise on some Sri Lankan Sites.... They seem to be more willing to believe this rubbish.... I mean eager to buy this performance enchancing product...
In other news, Magic Solutions will soon be releasing their Foot Squash Ball, guarenteed to make you jump higher, run faster and add inches to your height. Preorders will be taken.

So now we know Gilly's secret, anyone got the lowdown on the secrets to success for Warne, McGrath, Ponting, Hayden, and Hussey?

If gillys innings was totally out of the blue, I could possibly understand someone calling it an unfair advantage, but lets face it, we are talking about the same Gilly who tore apart the English in near record time - again when he was supposedly "out of sorts"

Just like in 1981, it will be a matter of time Australians starts to apologies in shame of what they have done now in 2007. If anyone interested I am more than happy to send few more articles which proves how the Australians have cheated in the past (in Cricket and in other sports too).
I can only imagine the response of the Australians, if Sri Lanka had won the cup and later they discover Sri Lankan players (i.e. Jayasuriya, Mahela, Sangakara, etc) have used such tactics. Then all those who protect such tactics would have an entire different story to stay. It is bit funny when you think of their mentality (then again maybe it is the genetics, after all they come from such background. Read the following for more)
Following is what Dept. Of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australian Government (http://www.dfat.gov.au/aib/history.html) has to say about the convict history of Australia.
In all, about 160 000 men and women were brought to Australia as convicts from 1788 until penal transportation ended in 1868. The convicts were joined by free immigrants from the early 1790s

LoardofCricket, I imagine the Australian response if Sri Lankan batsmen had used a squash ball would've been much like the response of the Sri Lankan cricket team or their chief executive - they didn't care either way.

Australian Cricket Team - Cheaters and Violators of the game
It is no surprise that in average Australian cricket players has got more penalties and match bans than any other international cricket team. Just another example to prove they are nothing but cheaters. Maybe they should be crowned as World Champions in Cheating
Read the following site contents from ICC to read about it

As a pom, the Aussies are not likely to get much praise from me, however, does anyone really believe that Australia WOULD NOT have won the world cup if Gilchrist did not use this squashball batting aid ?
If you think that they would not have, then I guess that you also think that England would have won the tornament if there top 5 used the same aid ? I don't think so.
Aussies domintaed the tournament, no one else came close. I can not realistically see how the South Africans could be the No1 rated team going in. Just goes to show that stats often mean bugger all.
So please move on, congrats to Austraila and good riddance to some of there best players, maybe other teams will now have a chance in future tornaments. That said, I sincerely hope that the recently retired from Aussie international cricket will surface in the English county game.

The MCC make and enforce the rules of cricket, and they have made their decision. Anything else from "Loard" and co is sour grapes and an EMBARRASMENT for the Sri Lankan players.
They played well during the tournament and deserve respect for their ability. They do NOT deserve to be embarrased by a handful of Sri Lankan bloggers who can't accept defeat by a better opposition.
This is a sad sad era for SL cricket. :(

For those who live in the stone-age, please note it is the ICC which makes the rules of the cricket (not MCC) - which includes rules for test and ODI matches and code of conducts
So those wants can read the following (except for Aussies who have no brains to understand or still lives in 1870s)
International Cricket Council is responsible for producing the regulations for all international cricket. This comprises playing conditions for test match and one day international cricket and the code of conduct for players, officials and umpires – source: http://www.icc-cricket.com/icc/rules/

"playing conditions" for matches ARE NOT the RULES of cricket.
The RULES are governed by the Marylebone Cricket Club
The ICC is just a (money-grubbing) company that organises international cricket events. Thats all.

Most people on this thread were deceplened, except for few who tried to bring in unnecessary irrelavant things such as Murali, underarm, warne, ponting bat etc.. What I can tell all you guys is that, as most AUssies believe that Murali is ok but there are a few who dont believe that, there will be a minority of SLs who beleive Gilly was unethical whilst the majority would be all right. Mind you, both are cleared by the respective authorities, players of each team dont blame each other. Its just some crazy fans and also there are extreme racists like Darrel Hair in both sides, but dont generalise those to all the countrymen. So, lets not generlise things to whole of countries. Lets be understanding. Rivalry is good for the game, but better to stay away from sentimental comments. As most said here, Cricket can do without those.

Timbo, If you have the ability to read and understand English, then please visit http://www.icc-cricket.com/icc/rules/ which clearly states who makes the rules.
Just to make things clear if you visit the Marylebone Cricket Club - Laws and Spirit section you would find MCC refers to the ICC for the rules (under the relevant sections category). It is true MCC, used to be the Lord of the cricket game during such time only England and Australia played cricket (too bad for Aussies now the situation is different). At the present, it is nothing but another cricket club (but important and influential club – may I say).
Some people may not like to accept that but that is the truth. In the present day it is the ICC which governs the cricket and all related matters. However, those who loved to believe it is MCC which makes the rule (and for good reason because some people in MCC already said what Australian cricketers have done is valid), please go ahead and dream on. But the fact remain it is the ICC which sets the rules for the game of cricket ICC - International Rules and Regulations
ICC not only set rules they can also banned certain countries playing cricket (remember the ban on South Africa – please do not say now it is the MCC which did that too). Maybe it is good idea to ban Australian cricket team altogether because if you read “Penalties imposed on players for breaches of ICC code of conduct” you would notice in an average Australian cricketers have done most number of violations and bans

OK, fine, you want to read? Let's read, here are the rules. (note: on the MCC website)
Here's a quote from the document:
See that? The MCC formed the code, amends the code, and holds the copyright!
Now, open that document and search for "ICC" or "International Cricket Council". It is mentioned only once in the preface:
The MEMBER COUNTRIES were consulted at some point in 2000 when the MCC updated the laws. NOT the ICC. That's because the ICC is just an organising body and no more than that.
Yes, the ICC can ban countries from playing in the international competition. That's because THEY ORGANISE IT. Thats what they do, they organise the international cricket competition. Simple.
They DONT ENFORCE THE RULES of the game!
In summary: If you still don't believe me, which one out of the MCC and the ICC has made an official statement about Gilchrist's usage of the squash ball, and which one hasn't?
Posted by Timbo on 2007-05-11 16:19:22
Here's a quote from the document:
The game of Cricket has been governed by a series of Codes of Law for over 250 years. These Codes have been subject to additions and alterations recommended by the governing authorities of the time. Since its formation in 1787, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has been recognised as the sole authority for drawing up the Code and for all subsequent amendments. The Club also holds the World copyright.
See that? The MCC formed the code, amends the code, and holds the copyright!
Now, open that document and search for "ICC" or "International Cricket Council". It is mentioned only once in the preface:
MCC consulted widely with all the Full Member Countries of the International Cricket Council, the Governing Body of the game.

PHYSICS BEHIND THE SQUASH BALL
Vijitha Herath of the University of Paderborn, Germany, writes on the issue:
Apropos the claim that Adam Gilchrist had a squash ball in his left glove during his innings at the finals of the cricket World Cup.
Let me offer a scientific perspective.
A squash ball is a rubber ball. Unlike a cricket (leather) ball, it compresses when pressure is applied on it. When the pressure is released, it takes its original shape. In short, it acts like a spring ( e.g.: a motorcycle shock absorber).
So what happens when a batsman has a squash ball in the palm of his bottom hand?
When a batsman swings the bat until it hits the ball, there is pressure on his bottom hand. This pressure compresses the squash ball thus storing energy in the ball similar to spring. Just after the ball hits the bat (ball still touching the bat) this pressure starts to relax while the bat is moving forward.
At the same time the energy stored in the squash ball releases its energy to the bat in the form of kinetic energy. The result is that the bat moves faster than normal (without a ball in the glove).
As a result, the release-speed of the cricket ball becomes faster resulting in the ball travelling further before hitting the ground. Therefore it results in more sixes and fours being scored.
The downside is because the bat travels faster than normal the batsman might lose control of the bat. This happened once in the Adam Gilchrist's innings when the bat slipped out of his hands and fell behind the wickets. If you have any doubts please try to do it yourself and see the result.
In brief Gilchrist's use of the squash ball allowed him to hit the ball further in the field.
The above explanation clearly gives you an insight into the fact that the squash ball was used not purely as a protective gear but, as a performance enhancer to a player who was playing his last World Cup innings and did not care of the consequences, but was hell bent on rubbing some glory upon himself.
Basically whole world believes that Aussies dont own WC. Thats all abt it!

You seem to think that the squash ball can add power to Gilchrist game, yet everyone from the umpires, MCC who set the rules, and even the Sri Lankan Cricket Team don't believe that. How do you explain that?
So if I had to choose between believing a random guy in Germany with no qualifications, or every cricketing organisation in the world and their experts.
So stop your whinging AS, or better yet have the faith of your convictions, and buy a Gilly Power Magic Ball, guarenteed to turn any batsman into a Gilchrist.*
*Guarentee not valid if your not Adam Gilchrist or his long lost twin.

So stop your whinging AS, or better yet have the faith of your convictions, and buy a Gilly Power Magic Ball, guarenteed to turn any batsman into a Gilchrist.*
*Guarentee not valid if your not Adam Gilchrist or his long lost twin.

I'm not responding to Lord an co. anymore. These guys are just sore losers, nothing else, who can't accept the fact that they were beaten by a better team.
Their illogical whining and pathetic "justifications" that go against the statements of cricket officaldom, and even their own team is just an insult to their country.
It's not my place to interrupt them doing that. I'm proud of my country and that's all that matters.
Gilly...you bloody beauty! :)

Timbo, Yes good that u r proud of ur country, Bcos u have no where else to go as UK didnt want the convicts and chased u away. And its also the country that u occupied by imposing power on poor aboriginals, who are the true owners of the land. So, there is every reason to be proud of an arrogant unrespectful country.

Is the too much to ask for people to pay attention to small matters such as "spelling" and "punctuation"? You want people to answer "facts", first establish the validity of your "facts".

Well, reading this post, naturally lead me to read the other thread, and I was bit confused where to comment. Finally decided this is the right place.
I'm totally in agreement with JC, and most of the others, regarding the "convicts comments". As MT said about, those comments comes out when people run out of ideas. I remember our ex-captain Ranatunga made some similar comments about Aussies some time back, and I was totally against his comments those days. (He would have forgot that Micheal Bevan grown up in Sri Lanka as a child, before their family moved Australia. Bevan's family was never convicts!)
My honest opinion is, it's wrong to drag in racial attacks when commenting about "cricket". Cricket is said to be a gentleman's game, and it's suppose to build friendship among nations. In that regards, some commenter on this blog can think of how fair it is to call Sri Lankans "sore grapes" or "bad losers". Some one has "started" it and they have to expect the reactions too. And some one have to stop it as well!
As a Sri Lankan, I believe we had all our rights to question the legality of Gilly's act. Now that MCC has cleared him, I'm sure most Sri Lankans (including me) can live with it. I always insisted on the fact that there was no questioning about Australia's triumph in WC 2007, and their #1 rank. But, most Aussies thought we Sri Lankans are "soar losers" and we just blame a squash ball for our failure. You are wrong!. It wasn't about winning and loosing, and it was about right and wrong. Finally, it was convicted "right" and we agree with it.
Some one said, "it's a bad era for Sri Lankan cricket!". Oh! We don't think so. We think this is the best era, and we have the best team ever in our history.

Voice in Colombo (VIC) while I appreciate your comments regarding the convict statements.
However the big important point to note is that at NO stage in this riduclous affair did any OFFICIAL, PLAYER, or CRICKETING BOARD, make any offical complaint or suggestion.
In other words it was only fans whinging and insulting Gilchrist and Australian by calling Gilchrist a Cheat and Australian Cheaters.
You ask if it was a sad era? I say not for the Sri Lankan Cricket Team but for the fans.
This was a massive over reaction from fans, with no basis in fact and the saddest and most embaressing thing is the way even after the MCC pointed out its no different to the way batsman might double grip their bat, you still have "fans" who claim its illegal. Nevermind the fans who claim racist bias in the ruling etc...
Justify it all you want VIC but in the complete and utter lack of any offical recognition of a problem this was at best a case of "bad sportsmanship" and at worst racial bigotry from sub-continent fans.
We also have seen no apology for the insult towards one of the most honest batsman in the world.
I will say however there were many Sri Lankan fans who said from the start there was no issue. To those fans please ignore the above words. However as is always the case on the internet they were drowned out by hostile bigoted fans, and supported by blog like yours VIC, who didn't even stop to consider the facts, or the lack of offical protest.

Australians always have been double sided, arrogant and uncivilised (how else can you define a bunch of thieves and murderess who robbed the country from the native aboriginals). Look at the case of their war on terror. While they shelter and fund terrorist organisations such as LTTE they speak about eradicating global terrorism (Especially how can they talk about terrorism when you consider they have terrorised the aboriginal people and robbed the country from them). At the same time they want to release people like David Hicks from the prison and bring them back to their sweet home. The reason – it is simple because he is a Aussie so it does not matter how terrible his crimes are as long as he is ‘a real Aussie’
The most reason case, Aussies are not going to Zimbabwe, the reason they say Zimbabwe have a dictatorship. Look who is talking, the same people who robbed the country from aboriginal people and dictate to this date!
The real reason - most of the white players of the Zimbabwe team were sacked (due to number of reason such as their reservation about including non-white players to the team) and lands were re-distributed to the right-full owners (from white farmers who robbed these lands from Zimbabwe people during the colonial period). Both of these were effecting the white people, those who have ancestral links with UK. At that time UK made a big fuss over this and naturally now Aussie (since they have ancestral links with UK) trying to talk about democracy. Look who is talking, why not start this at home. Go to your own libraries and read what you have done to aboriginal people, provide them better health care (a recent study shows they have the lowest level of health care in the world – for native people) and then and only then Aussies can even starts to think about democracy
So going back to my point, Aussies have different way of thinking (like I mentioned before it is in their genetics and related to their family history) and justifying about the same thing when it is done by a Aussie and from someone from somewhere else

If you really have deluded yourself to the "truth" that Australia refused to tour Zimbabwe because of their team having no white players, I'm afraid I have nothing left to say.
And since when did treating the symptoms rather than the cause serve any purpose than to mank the problem even worse than before?
