Yuvraj Singh puts Australia to the sword in 16 run victory

The inaugural Twenty20 World Cup will feature an all subcontinent final after Pakistan dispatched New Zealand and a pumped India defeated Australia by 16 runs. Batting first, India began slowly, picking off singles and building an innings. Brett Lee bowled with speed and aggression, knowing a good performance here could help him push another million Bollywood singles. However, two early wickets merely served to bring in Mr Six Sixes himself.

I had high expectations from Yuvraj Singh and he didn't disappoint. After taking one ball to get his eye in, he pulled a Mitchell Johnson short ball for six. Next over, he hit Brett Lee high into the mid-wicket crowd for a 119 metre six, the biggest of the tournament. He brought up his 50 (off just 20 balls), totally demolishing a Stuart Clark slower ball. Finally, Singh fell for 70 off 30 balls, skying Michael Clarke to mid-wicket. Bowling Clarke with Singh in full flight was a gutsy decision from Gilchrist - if Singh had stayed in, India would've likely have passed 200.

Robin Uthappa hit the first two balls of a Mitchell Johnson over for six. I thought he might try to emulate Singh but Andrew Symonds spoiled the party on the next delivery, spectacularly throwing down his stumps from mid-wicket. India finished with 5 for 188 with Australia needing 9.5 runs per over to win.

Gilchrist and Hayden struggled early, thanks largely due to some belligerent bowling from Shanthakumaran Sreesanth. He beat the bat regularly, clean bowled Adam Gilchrist and gave the batsmen death-stares Andre Nel would be proud of. Sreesanth's first 3 overs yielded 1 for 6, extraordinary figures in Twenty20. Finally, Hayden found his range and hit Sharma out of the ground (curiously, it didn't break Singh's 119 metre record). Hodge and Hayden began to accelerate the run-rate until Hodge knocked a juicy legside short ball straight to short fine leg.

From this point, the match seesawed either way. Hayden's 50 came off 40 balls - not as spectacular as Singh but an invaluable anchor for Australia. The match began to turn Australia’s way as Hayden and Symonds built a useful partnership - the run-rate required fell to 9 runs per over. However, Sreesanth came back in and knocked Hayden's off stump out of the ground, finishing with figures of 2 for 12. Symonds and Hussey rattled 22 runs off 2 overs until Pathan bowled Symonds in the 16th over.

Harbhajan Singh in the 17th over proved a match turner. With Australia needing 30 off the last 3 overs, he bowled Michael Clarke and conceded only 3 runs. Australia were unable to polish off the 27 runs required in the last 12 balls and finished a feeble 16 runs short.

All in all, the match was a cracker despite the result. Before tonight, I was ambivalent about Australia's upcoming tour of India, a fairly meaningless 7 match one day series (would it kill them to play a few Tests?). Now I find myself working out time differences and wondering if Channel 9 will be providing coverage. One thing's for sure - retailers of Indian flags and blue & yellow face paint better start stockpiling supplies.

JC - That (your post) was very quick! Within minutes of the match getting over... I just checked to see if you'd written anything on it.... and you didnt disappoint...

How often do you see Brett Lee, Bracken and Clark all going wicketless? Both Bracken and Clark went for 9.5 runs an over each!!

Aussies were electric in the field and gave nothing away in the first 8 overs.

When Yuvraj came to the middle, Indian run rate was pathetic at just 5 runs per over.. and when he left the rate was 9... That tells a story, doesn't it?

Dhoni's cool captaincy allowed his bowlers to respond, I guess. The normally wayward Sreesanth troubled Hayden no end... and I think it was Hayden's fall that led to Aussie's defeat. (like Kemp's wicket leading to the victory against SAfrica the other day)

What a dream final it's gonna be on Monday.... The sponsors are smiling!! Here's hoping a billion Indians do too at about 8.45pm Indian Time on Monday!!

Cheers

Can it get better than this for Indians and Pakistanis?

I had deadly wanted this final, and had been bickering with people on cricket forums about its possibility. Everyone thought India's chances are slim.

But heck, here we are.

Maybe the Pakistan and Indian sponsors can make up the money they lost at the World Cup.

As for my prompt posting, I had the brainwave of watching the game next to my laptop - I wrote the blogpost during the match then as soon as it was finished, I transferred the text file to our main computer and uploaded it.

Sorry to say I won't be staying up to watch the final though - not if Australia aren't playing. :-(

sreesanth is an irritating bowler/ cricketer/ an annoying fellow ... his ugly face topped with his nettlesome gestures and behavior gets more onto the spectators' nerves than the opponents'; same goes with yuvaraj singh...they played good, but urghhhh their face, their expressions, and their needless aggression which makes their face look displeasing to the senses ....yuk...suitable to spit on
Posted by indian faces on 2007-09-23 15:38:59
indians are noted all over for their persistence and diligence... BUT, their irritable attitude always discounts this.. they way they overdo things, they way they 'show off' unnecessarily, et al.. still makes them one of the most reprehensible tribes!!.. cricket is the most appropriate example here

yeah...spit on 'em... ugly lookin faces...they deserve it..

Hey 'Indian Faces' and 'Indian Attitude': Okay, Sreesanth was irritatingly aggressive. How was Mr Bret Lee?? Why was he pumped up angry in the very first over (as if his mom spanked him)?? He mouthed unspeakables at Gambhir... why? Just because he smote him to the point boundary?

To me, there are 2 gentlemen cricketers in the Aussie team.. Gilchrist and Stuart Clark.. and there are a couple of not-at-all-gentle brawny rowdies, more irritating than Sreesanth at his best/worst!

Do you want Sreesanth to look pretty after being subject to Aussie sledging? If sledging is supposed to be an integral part of cricket, then, ugly irritation also is.

And, 'ugly' or 'pretty' is relative. Though fair in skin, Bracken has the most devilish face in my opinion. I think I never saw anything remotely evil than his face even in any horror movie.. not even in Child's Play or Evil Dead.

Remember, India never sledge or irritate Gilchrist. He is respected. As for the rest, an eye for an eye is just fair.

I've got no problem with Sreesanth's attitude (to be honest, I find Dhoni and Bracken's preening hairstyles more annoying). Maybe it's not cricket but a bit of attitude and belligerence spices things up which I find quite entertaining so long as it doesn't cross the line.
Posted by JC on 2007-09-23 16:04:11
JC - Sreesanth has to tone down his appealing, I guess. The umpires were right in docking 25% of his fees for excessive appealing last nite. I guess the mantra should be: Give it right back to the opposition when they sledge, but dont get on the wrong side of the umpires.

Having said all this, Freddie Flint mouthed obscenities (apparently) at Yuvraj before the 6 sixes happened. Where was the match referee, umpires et al.?

Or is sledging allowed, and only excessive appealing that is called a crime in modern day cricket???????

eye for an eye is understood ..alright! i would have found defaced sreesanth and yuvaraj pretty had their aggression countered andre nel.. but do you think that was necessary? did that exaggerated appeal make any sense? these are the stuff that provoke anyone against indians.. i can reciprocate your respect for gill by the new guy sharma, joginder, even pathan (yesterday)'s cool.. but appreciation for yuvaraj and sreesanth simply wards off after we see their "unwarranted" abuses..it makes them look like panwallahs.. if u are an indian, u must know how it feels when you are confronted by an irritating rick driver.. it's got nothin to do with color of the skin.. srilankans, banglas, pakis are equally bad looking cricketers, but why are they never hated? i support all aggressions against SA, Aus, and Eng attitude towards asians.. but there are ways to show it.. u don't show your panwalla and rickwalla self by banging on the ground, abusing, dancing the cheapest way and making a mockery of yourself.. remember when ajhar mehmood was caught abusing by the stump mic, indians made a big fuss over it for days, calling it "against the international standards" as if they knew anything more about it.. now that they're doing it, it's fair? remember one wrong cannot be undone by another

I think the Indians show confidence. They didn't take a backward step. That is the only way to beat Australia. There is no doubt Sre went over board. There is no need to sned blokes off after wickets or appeal for 43 seconds.

But all it shows is that he is not a robot. Which is a good thing.
Posted by Uncle J rod on 2007-09-23 17:33:27
Yeah Right - Hey, Yuvi's anger and Sreesanth's antics were not unprovoked!!

India batted first. Brett Lee was the first bowler. Who irritated Lee? Why was he angry and mouthing something at Gambhir? There was no Yuvi or Sreesanth in sight... Bret Lee planned to irritate the openers upfront. It was totally unprovoked.

Gambhir's only 'crime' was to hit Lee for a four to point. And, Lee's temper hit the roof!!! Sreesanth is not half as handsome as Lee and obviously was not a pretty sight. But Lee's antics were totally unprovoked. It was just his basic instincts surfacing... I mean, brawns ripping out when the brain failed!!!

India never sledge or irritate Gilchrist. He is respected?? What do ya mean, Mahesh?? You do know that he has been charged for a couple of dissents?? Sure, he's a gentleman and I've got nothing against him (in fact, I find him a bit cute...and just to say, I'm a girl) but he is quite emotinal at times and intends to lose it and start sledging and stuff like that to the opposing players/umpires. I mean, Brett Lee made a Bollywood single in India and he got sledged...(well, that's probably becuase he kept on mouthing things and giving the batsmen death-stares all the time) but anyway, all I'm saying is that, just becuase a guy is a gentleman dosen't mean that he's behaving well at all times.

I wonder what will happen when Gilly sledges Indian players...hmm...that'd be great! LOL :)
Posted by Aussie on 2007-09-23 18:07:37
well well... all i say is, mahesh, there are ways to respond to sledging heroes - provoked, unprovoked.. but when faces like sresaanth, yuvaraj do it, it looks just as irritating... murli is twice as horrifying as yuvaraj singh, but he doesn't show tantrums that makes him look more horrifying and stupid.. talk about the west indians..and even the indians in the west indies.. they're cool. yuvaraj couldn't have answered flintoff better than those 6 6s. that's it, he did it and proved it. why overdo the aggression..there couldn't have been a better answer to ppl like fintoff, peterson, nel, et al than sweeping sixes off their feet..but why does it have to sustain..that's the problem with indian cricketers .. they overdo till it becomes un-appreciable. they need to learn to moderate their expressions and body language so that they continue to get more praises than abuses (at least from spectators other than indians)
and right.. cute gilchrist has not been a Christ with paks and lankans too

It was a great match to watch despite the final score. India were better in the final 3 overs of both innings, that was the difference.

I have to say Haddin didn't do himself any favours tonight. Fluffing a catch, and trying to slog the ball and missing several times in the last 2 overs when he would have been better off getting a single and giving Hussey the strike.

I think they would have been better off going with Hogg as a replacement for Watson, rather than Haddin.

Glad we didn't win this tournament. Much as I hate to see Aussies lose at anything, the World Cup of 20/20 Cricket would look strangely out of place with the superior trophies presenting gracing the ACB mantelpiece.

Posted by Anir on 2007-09-24 18:53:06
Ok..ok...So, Sreesanth misbehaved... But who provoked Brett Lee? Why did he misbehave in the first over of the match????

I repeat, Lee is handsome and Sreesanth is ugly, but both are hooligans to me.

Ponting wrote an article in a newspaper here (Dubai).. He was a cry baby. He lamented that Aussies had no match practice... He said Hussey was injured... He also said that Sreesanth didnt deserve that great bowling analysis... he said that Sreesanth bowled rank bad deliveries to Australia and the batsmen did not capitalise..

Is Ponting insulting Sreesanth or he is admonishing Hayden for playing 9 dot balls on the trot to Sreesanth's bowling??

Ponting also said that Hayden and Gilly have been playing so well that the other batters did not get enough match practice..

Crybaby... Ponting should go back to school and learn to be graceful in defeat.

As I write this, India have beaten Pak in the final. And, Sreesanth behaved himself today. He has learnt from the day-before's mistakes. He has come around. Will Brett Lee and Ponting??

Mahesh, don't suppose you have a link to that Ponting article? Sounds like it's worth blogging on, addressing one of my pet peeves about Ponting as captain.

Re the comments on Shreesanth and Lee, I have to admit that I love nothing more than a big fast bowler getting fired up..

One of my favourites in recent times is Andre Nel.. the way he plays the villan to get the crowd fired up against him and harnesses their boos and agression to inspire passion in himself to get his adrenalin pumping so hard that he takes wickets is brilliant. He unfortunately crosses the line on occasion, but this is to be expected from someone so passionate.

The last thing I want to see is sanitised emotions and pommish moderated behaviour from fast bowlers.

Mahesh is right.I wasnt too impressed with Ponting's article published here in India. He blamed injuries, lack of match practise, lots of travel, tough conditions...in short everything except his own team's bad performance. But the thing that I really didn't like about that article was the comment on Sreesanth's bowling. He said sreesanth didnt deserve his figures of 2-12,and got away with some wayward bowling. Now that really isnt a good point because it was Hayden,Australias top scorer in the tournament, the man with most match practice, who was swinging all over the place, missing and who eventually was done in by him.Probably is why Ricky Ponting isnt very popular here in the subcontinent.I love the Australian cricket team for their energy, tenacity and to an extent their arrogance. But personally I didnt like their attitude towards T20.I always believed that even if you challenged Australia to a 3 overs a side game, they would treat it as a management excercise and come up with exactly the right plans and strategies and win.But in this world cup they just havent been the ruthless Australia we saw a few months ago in the carribean annihilating all cricketing nations of the world. One thing that suggests this is that they had an excuse ready even before the T20 tournament started which didn't go too well with me.Lets hope they have got over their post World cup blues and come back with a dominating performance here in India.

Also JC...what do you think about the newest form of cricket? Is it good for the game?Do you agree with any of the points that I posted in the previous article about 20 20 cricket?(the one on yuvrajs 6 sixes)

You only remember about the negative things Ponting wrote about.

Don't you remember his tribute to Yuvraj at the beginning of the article?

Personally I agree with everything he said in the article, except for the Sreesanth. It was balanced and mentioned both positives and negatives. It's a shame that some readers only choose to remember the negative.

Only members of the Indian team can tell whether there is a problem with Yuvraj Singh’s attitude. But I think it was wrong on the part of assistant coach Lalchand Rajput to go public with the accusations and that too in the middle of a Test series. This is unprofessional behaviour. Rajput’s untimely remarks have stirred a controversy and disturbed the team spirit. Australians are always looking for such opportunities to target our team with devious mind games. Rajput has unwittingly exposed the team’s weakness. If at all there was an issue with Yuvraj’s behaviour or attitude, Rajput should have discussed the issue with the players and dealt with the problem in the privacy of the dressing room. Now, every member of the team is being made to answer awkward questions. Does anyone else think Rajput may have cost us the series?
