India vs Australia, 4th Test, Day 5

Apologies I neglected to blog yesterday - was out all day. However, what little I did catch of the cricket on the radio was pretty frustrating. I must confess I'm growing mighty tired of Ricky Ponting's peculiar brand of captaincy. He spends so long agonising over field positioning, he runs out of time and is forced to employ part-timers to catch up on overs. It makes no difference whether deep mid-wicket is standing two metres to the left or three metres to the right when you've got Mike Hussey trundling dibbly dobblies. What you ensure is the batsman gets his eye in and players like Harbhajan Singh make a half-century. Great tactics, Punter!

Australia go into Day 5 with 10 wickets in hand and 380 runs to win the match and series. The odds of achieving such a run chase is unlikely, nigh impossible. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to observe Australia's approach. Will they bat for a draw from the outset? The three boundaries they struck in the first over of their innings just before stumps seems to indicate otherwise.

I hope they'll go for the win. It would be an audacious attempt - something you'd imagine the old Australia in their pomp would attempt. Not that the old Australia in their pomp ever got in the position where they had to chase 380 runs on Day 5 to win. Good luck boys! Live score courtesy of Cricinfo

Woah, first couple of overs and the Australian batsmen are batting IPL style. They're going for it big time!

Hayden reaches 50 just after lunch. He's been dropped twice. If he and Hussey can bat through much of the second session, Australia have a genuine chance at this. If India do lose, they only have themselves to blame.

If they lose 3 wickets before tea, it's all over.

JC - You are spot on, Ponting's assessment. Ponting as captain reminds me of Sourav Ganguly's Stint as Captain with Greg Chappell as coach, Ganguly who started as aggressive captain, showed similar symptoms with slow over rates, too much time spent on field positioning etc. Incidentally that phase coincided with Ganguly's bad patch as batsman as well.

Never the less, another bad day in office for Australian team. I have written this on this blog before, Gilchrist should have been captain of Australia ahead of Punter. Anyway in current situation, there is no way out but Put Punter under "knife". CA always takes bold measures, I am anxious to find out how they manage this situation. Time for "Change" Punter should go out with his lookalike "World leader" who is leaving post end of the year ;-)

What a disgrace this series was for aussies.
Ponting is in a world of his own, Cameron White was in the side and Matty Hayden leaves it to a dying test to score some runs.
If White/Hayden aren't dropped for the next series I wont even follow the scores.
Full credit to India, their bowling attack is way above the rest of the world.
p.s Brett Lee shouldve thought about bowling at his ex-missus to gather some steam. I havent seen him look so shithouse for a very long time.
pps. Krejza's performance was brilliant, all ppl seem to talk about is the runs conceded. He bowled 50% of our overs. Good job mate.

i still dont think its wrong from ponting as a captain,,he has done hardly anything wrong..its just that he was facing defeat from a better team and thats getting a bit unusual for the media..

I disagree Purush
No doubt, the Media are 'overhyping' the issue. But the core problem with Ricky for me is the time he spends between overs. The media have not focussed on this as much. It is not a new phenomenon, he has been doing it for way too long now - even during Australian Summers.

If he doesn't fix that, then he is not a great captain for mine. He is good, and his record is more reflective of the players he had around him than his real 'strategic skill'.
